I’m super excited to share my latest interview with a brand I absolutely love, hello DODO. They design and create the most colourful, fun designs, which are totally unique and don’t half make me smile. They also share awesome animations on their Instagram page!
Hi there, can you tell the lovely Simple Stylish Makes readers a little bit about yourself?
Hello! We’re Ali & Jam AKA hello DODO, the playful printmakers and designers based by the seaside in Worthing, Sussex. We design and print screen printed posters, t-shirts, tote bags, baby clothes, badges, enamel pins, embroidered patches and more…all with the purpose of making people smile!
When did you both start designing/making?
We’ve both been creative our whole lives and that lead us eventually to Plymouth University where we met each other. Jam was studying Graphic Design with Typography and I was studying Design Photography. It wasn’t until a few years after graduating that we realised we had ideas and wanted to work on a project together. Screen printing just seemed like the right thing to do, even though Jam had only done it a few times at uni and I’d never done it! We just decided to go for it and create a home studio set up and began to teach ourselves the ways of the squeegee!
What do you both love about designing/making?
There are two main things that we love about designing and making. Firstly, we love to come up with daft ideas and then go from a doodle to a finished design onscreen, then burn it to silkscreen and pull it as a print. Nothing beats that excitement of lifting the screen to reveal the hand printed design for the first time; that’s really special. The other part we love is being able to share our work with people all over the world with social media! Hearing that other people love what you’re doing is totally amazing.
Can you share any top designing/making tips?
Top tips…it sounds cheesy but be true to yourself and create work that makes you happy. If you love it it’s very likely that other people will too! Also connect with other creatives and indie brands in the community, it can be a bit scary and lonely running your own business but there’s a whole load of other people out there in the same boat and they’re your support network.
When you’re not designing/making, what do you both like to do?
It’s not often that we’re NOT designing and making, even in our down time we’re usually coming up with new ideas because that’s what we love to do! We also love going on adventures with our black pug Hero though and hanging out with our friends in sunny pub gardens!
Thanks so much, Ali and Jam, it’s been great hearing all about your creative world and what you love about designing/making. Keep up the incredible designs!
